AI Data Centers are already increasing electricity rates in Michigan

  • The J.H. Campbell coal plant in West Olive MI is the last coal plant in Michigan

  • It has been operational since 1962 and Consumers Energy announced its plan to retire the coal facility in 2021, it was scheduled to retired May 31 2025.

  • In February 2025, President Trump signed an Executive Order 14156 Declaring a National Energy Emergency

    • The Department of the Interior issued an emergency order stating: “We are currently engaged in an Artificial Intelligence arms race and meeting the power demands of this industry, which is literally manufacturing intelligence, is key to our national security.”

    • This plant is staying open to meet anticipated AI energy demands to avoid supply shortfalls.  Customers are paying from their pockets and their health.

  • On May 23, 2025, and again in August 2025 and February 2026, The Dept of Energy issued an Emergency Order, requiring the Campbell Coal Plant to stay open, which is estimated to cost Michigan tax payers $615,000 / day or each of consumers 1.9 million customers, $10 / month.

    • “The unnecessary recent order from the U.S. Department of Energy will increase the cost of power for homes and businesses in Michigan and across the Midwest.” Dan Scripps Chair MSPC (source)
